- There was once a one-mile-long island called Hog Island just south of Rockaway Beach. After the hurricane of 1893, this island totally disappeared off the grid.
- About 1 in every 38 people living in the US live in New York City. Big city!
- New Yorkers drink almost 7 times more coffee than other cities in the US. Of course this one PROBABLY isn’t super surprising.
- Until World War 2, anyone moving in New York City was only able to move out per their lease on May 1st. With the amount of moving apartments New Yorkers do, luckily this didn’t last very long!
- Visited Times Square lately? You probably didn’t know that Times Square is named after the New York Times. Before it was called Times Square, it was Longacre Square until the New York Times claimed it in 1904.
- In 2010, 38 percent of all 911 calls in NYC were butt dials. Amazing.
- NYC buries its unclaimed bodies on an island off the coast of the Bronx called Hart Island…free of charge! Since 1869, nearly a million bodies have been buried there.
- How do you feel about oysters? New Yorkers really like their oysters. So much so that oyster shells were used to pave the city’s Pearl Street!
- It’s no secret that the world’s elite flock to New York City, but did you know that the city houses over 380,000 millionaires?
